Some of my fondest childhood memories are of making the drive from the Dallas metroplex to the city to visit grandma. I loved it. If you’re making a trip to the Big D, you must read up on the great things to do in Dallas with your kids, because at the end of the day, it’s about making awesome memories. Isn’t it?
Let’s start with The Arts District, my absolute favorite place to go in Dallas…
1.Dallas Museum of Art. Even if your kids aren’t museum types, they will surely love the children’s section of the Dallas Museum of Art. Chock full of creativity and art supplies at their fingertips, your kids will love creating masterpieces. Note: General admission is free everyday and includes viewing the museum’s galleries and most exhibitions. Special exhibition admission is $16 or less everyday. Parking at the museum is $10.
2.Nasher Sculpture Center. Only a stone’s throw from the Dallas Museum of Art, the Nasher Sculpture Center is another must stop with the kids. It’s smaller than the DMA, but the outside garden is fabulous. If you can, plan your visit for the first Saturday of the month. Admission is free and full of fun activities for the kids (scavenger hunts, art activities, and more). All other days, admission is $10 for adults, children 12 and under are free.
3.Reflection Pool in Sammons Park. Not only is it a perfect photo opp, but the Reflection Pool in Sammons Park is also the perfect spot to enjoy an outside picnic and let your kids run around and cool off in the water. A close walk from the DMA and Nasher, it’s a sight you won’t want to miss.
4.Perot Museum of Nature and Science. Across the highway but still in the Arts District, sits the Perot Museum of Nature and Science. Don’t let the museum part of its name trick you into thinking your kids will think it’s boring, because this place screams INTERACTIVE FUN! My kids did not want to leave. Racing cheetahs, 3D shows, robot building, lab experiments, need I go on? It’s a good idea to buy tickets online, because this place is popular and has been known to sell out!
Continuing our list, let’s see what’s available OUTSIDE!
5.Dallas Arboretum. The Dallas Arboretum is the perfect place to explore while admiring the beauty at every turn. It’s also a great place for kids to expel some energy. Be sure to bring a picnic and drinking water! The Arboretum frequently has activities on the calendar, so be sure to check their website to see what’s going on. Tickets start at $15 (unless you’re a member). Be sure to check the web for discount days!
6.The Dallas Zoo. What kid doesn’t love walking around looking at animals? The Dallas Zoo is a fun treat for young and old alike. Stop and feed the giraffes, have a little splash in the water at the children’s zoo, and visit the Outback and other foreign lands to see what furry friends live in other parts of the world. Admission starts at $15, but be sure to check the web for discount days!
7.Dallas Children’s Theater. I’m a firm believer in exposing kids to the art of theater. The Dallas Children’s Theater is the perfect place for that! With productions geared specially for kids, it’s a great place to help them develop a love for theater at a young age. An added bonus is meeting the actors and actresses in the lobby after the play! Tickets start at just $12. Be sure to check their calendar on the web for upcoming plays.
Have a grand time visiting my hood. Dallas has lots to offer. This is only a sampling of what there is to explore with your kids!
