In Defense of the Yoga Pants Mindset

Shouldn’t we be more worried about how people feel inside our homes, rather than what they see inside them?

We’ve all been there. It’s Friday evening, you’re back from work having just thrown on that perfectly lounge-worthy pair of yoga pants, kicked back on the couch with a bag of Red Vines (no? just me?) ready to relax for the night.

When suddenly, a knock! The dreaded knock at the door that inevitably means rushing your comfy buns back to the bedroom and putting on something more presentable and UNcomortable in order to entertain whomever has decided to show up unexpectedly.

UGH, ammirite?

…But let’s back up, shall we?

Because, though I have definitely been this person on more occasions than I’m comfortable admitting, I want to take a stand and come to the defense of staying in the yoga pants mindset—no matter who is knocking on your door.

We live in an age where we tend to immediately bristle when we hear that rap at the door. We’re on edge, anxious about entertaining and scrambling to make sure our homes are at least semi-Instagram-level presentable.

Why?

I’m going to assume that most everyone who comes knocking at your door on a Friday evening is at least somewhat familiar with you and your living situation. And if they’re not, why shouldn’t they be? Shouldn’t we be more worried about how people feel inside our homes, rather than what they see inside them? Shouldn’t it be more about our mindset and presence than what we’re capable of presenting?

YES.

Rockstar author and awesome mom, Shannan Martin, recently said that we should set the bar at a place of comfort in our homes. People need to know that we’re human, so they can feel comfortable in all their humanness, too. And it’s often scary to come forward in your own stretchy-pantsed vulnerability—but someone has to take the first step, and I’m asking that that person be you.

Keep on the yoga pants. Leave the dishes in the sink. Let the kids continue playing with their toys in the front room. It sends the instant message that visitors are welcome in your home, just the way they are. No judgment, no perfectly creased business attire required.

You have the chance to create hygge in your home, for more than just your family. It can be a sanctuary where EVERYONE is welcome to feel like they fit in, are cared for, and seen as an equal.

All because of the humble yoga pant.
