This holiday season we’re featuring the BEST CHRISTMAS RECIPES that have been inherited from the women in our families. Our team over here at Today’s Mama is sharing our very favorite, most nostalgic, holiday recipes and we’ve invited some of our friends across the internet to do the same.

Grandma’s Cake Donuts from the Kitchen of Kara Baxter

Grandma Baxter was one of the most incredible women I’ve ever known. Her life was incredibly difficult from the start but she was always soft, kind, and beyond loving to everyone she met. Baking was one of the ways she showed her love, and she has passed on several classics to our family—these donuts being a major favorite and permanent holiday tradition.

Grandma never measured anything, being the OG Kitchen Master that she was, but somehow we got a few things written down to pass on. Lucky us!

GRANDMA BAXTER’S CAKE DONUT RECIPE

Ingredients

  • 4 – 4 ¾ cups flour
  • 3 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp nutmeg
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup milk
  • 3 T melted shortening
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Instructions

  1. Sift together on waxed paper: flour, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg.
  2. Beat eggs. Add sugar and beat again. Add milk and beat again.
  3. Add melted shortening and vanilla and beat.
  4. Beat in dry ingredients 1 cup at a time.
  5. Cover and refrigerate at least 3 hours. Will keep for 1 week in the fridge.
  6. Heat 1 ½ inches of oil until 350 degrees or until a donut hole is golden brown in 1 minute.
  7. Flour a pastry cloth, rolling pin, and cutter. Roll dough to ¼ inch thick. Cut each donut with a your floured cutter. Handle as little as possible.
  8. Drop 4 in oil at one time and brown, turn over with tongs or slotted spoon. Drain on crumpled paper towels.
  9. Dip in sugar.
  10. EAT THEM ALL.
