Summer Reading Bucket List

Do you have a summer reading bucket list?

Do you have a summer reading bucket list? We decided to try to read every book on the Caldecott Medal book list. I started out thinking we’d try tackling the Newbury list, but those are all much longer than I remembered for my little people to tackle in a summer.

The Randolph Caldecott Medal annually recognizes the preceding year’s “most distinguished American picture book for children”, beginning with 1937 publications. You can find a complete list here.

Each night before bed, we curl up and tackle 1 or 2 or these beautiful books.

Here are a few of our favorites from this summer’s reading:

  • A Sick Day for Amos McGee
  • Flotsam
  • The Glorious Flight: Across the Channel with Louis Bleriot
  • Cinderella, or The Little Glass Slipper
  • Officer Buckle and Gloria

Looking for more ideas for your summer reading bucket list? Check out this creative list from Scholastic Parents:

  • Read an ancient myth
  • Read a fairytale
  • Read a retold fairytale
  • Read under a tree
  • Read a book recommended by a friend
  • Read a book about talking animals
  • Read for two hours straight
  • Read a book without words
  • Read a historical fiction book
  • Read a book that takes place in your state
  • Read a library book
  • Read a book your parent loved as a kid
  • Read a book with a grown-up
  • Read a book while eating your favorite snack
  • Read a book in a tent
  • Read a book at the beach
  • Read a book at the park
  • Read a book about someone your age
  • Read your favorite book again
  • Read a book that takes place in another country
  • Read a book that takes place in another time
  • Read a book that takes place in another universe
  • Start a new series
  • Read a non-fiction book
  • Read an award-winning book
  • Read a book . . . then watch the movie

By reading the Caldecott books we’ve crossed a lot of these items off the list!

What are your kids reading this summer?
