For those of you San Diego North residents with a sweet tooth, life just got a lot sweeter. Right at the intersection of Encinitas Blvd and El Camino Real, you can now find a mecca for all things sweet at the delightful and delicious Yummy Cupcakes. Their menu includes seventeen flavor combinations served daily (except for Sundays when they’re closed) plus nine daily specials which include glute-less, vegan and sugar-free options. And if that wasn’t enough, Yummy Cupcakes also offers several other mouth-watering treats like cupcake pops, cupcake truffles, cupcakie pies, and their signature cupcakes in a jar.
Last week my daughters and I were treated to a special cake tasting with one of the managing partners, Renato Cautela (man, I love my job!).
Taking a 5 and 7 year old who haven’t yet learned the ability to say “oh it’s delicious” while holding back a gag reflex, to a tasting is a little nerve wracking, especially when the owner is sitting right there, awaiting their innocent, truthful responses. Thankfully, everything was delicious and you could see it on their faces and hear it in their groans. When the kids dove into the Worm in the Dirt and the Fudge Yummy, I thought their eyes were going to roll back in their heads from the ecstasy. I, too, thought I had died and gone to sweet-tooth heaven. The cakes were unbelievably moist and the frostings were smooth and light and just the right amount of sweet.
Our other favorites from the tasting included:
Recommended for You
- Peanut Butter & Jelly – Perfect for your little PB & J lover.
- Old School – If you remember going to 7-11 and buying the Chocolate Hostess Cupcakes then this is for you. To. Die. For.
- Lemon Lime – Served with a little straw on top for decor, this one is light, refreshing and delish!
- Chocolate Mint Chip – This is my favorite ice cream flavor and now possibly my favorite cupcake flavor. They also serve a sugar-free version of the Chocolate Mint Chip that is just as divine as the regular version.
Other unique flavors on their menu that I didn’t try include: Pancakes n’ Bacon, Tea & Jam, Chocolate Merlot, and Buttered Popcorn. And for the booze lovers out there, Yummy Cupcakes offers several cocktail inspired cupcake flavors such as The Irish Car Bomb (I tasted this one and it was amazing!), Maker’s Mark Whisky Caramel Pecan, and the classic Mojito. Yummy!
We loved our tasting experience so much that we ordered two dozen for my daughter’s birthday this past weekend. I should have recorded all of the responses from the guests, both kids and adults, when they had their first bite of Yummy Cupcake goodness. Every flavor was a hit and we have now found our cupcake home.
For your next birthday party or just any ol’ day of the week when you’re craving a sweet treat, head down to Yummy Cupcakes. You will LOVE it.
Disclosure: I was given a complimentary tasting of twelve cupcakes in exchange for this review. All opinions are my own.
