Sure, all the Christians are cookie-ing it up for Christmas, but for Hanukkah, there are jelly donuts! Sufganiyot are fried jelly donuts that commemorate the miracle of the oil lasting eight days instead of one.
And I can never turn down a jelly donut.
I found this recipe on The Blog on 16th and Q, along with a wonderful shared memory of a trip to Isreal in 1972 and the making of sufganiyot in the kibbutz kitchen. Now I need to ask my dad if he remembers sufganiyot from his days on the kibbutz.
