No, I’m not trying to be difficult; the title of our book is The Name of this Book is Secret. It kind of reminds me of the whole Abbot and Costello “Who’s on First” routine.
We started off our meeting with our tradition of sharing our favorite parts of the book. I won’t include any spoilers, but this is a cute middle grade mystery. Then we each had a secret message to decode with the help of the keyword code at the back of the book. It was so much fun; we all made a secret message for the person sitting next to us. There are also instructions for making your own keyword code.
Our central activity was our own Symphony of Smells. We had several Dixie cups holding a different “ingredient”. Our list included spices, parmesan cheese, chocolate syrup, soap, baby oil, coins and paint. I didn’t think a few of the things had a smell, like parmesan cheese and coins. I’m not sure if the coins had a smell, but it was hard to pass them around silently and their sound gave them away. As for the rest of ingredients, they did have distinctive smells. Be careful about lotions and soap, since they are made to smell like other things. As each item was passed around, we wrote what we thought the scent was; it was much trickier than imagined.
We enjoyed Cass’s Super-Chip Trail Mix or our version of it at least, while we chose a new book to read for our next family book club.
