The newest live theater experience at Disneyland arrived this week: Mickey and the Magical Map.

It’s an all-new production mixing live performers, classic Disney characters, puppetry, and an interactive LED screen, all with that touch of Disney magic. The story begins when Yen Sid, the wizard from Fantasia, leaves Mickey alone with a magical map. Mickey’s curiosity gets the better of him, sending him, and us, on a journey through a world of color and excitement.

I had a chance to catch a preview of Mickey and the Magical Map before it opened to the public on May 25th. I didn’t expect to be drawn into the story, but Mickey and the Magical Map was completely engaging. The show started with Mickey on stage and grew to include a large cast of performers. Classic songs mix with new arrangements, and a song written especially for the show, for an experience that’s at once nostalgic and exciting. I’m always impressed with the quality of the performances at a Disney show–and it’s no wonder: more than 900 people tried out for the final company of 50. Mickey and the Magical Map clocks in about 20 minutes, and it’s a true spectacle for any family.

When you enter the remodeled, open-air Fantasyland Theater, be sure to notice the beautiful, soaring sails for a ceiling. The benches are arranged in a gentle slope that makes every seat in the house a good one. The lit proscenium perfectly frames the stage, just one more solidly executed Disney detail. I found out the Magical Map moves on two wagons that weigh more than 9,000 pounds each! The care and craft in every aspect are remarkable; it all adds to the experience.

I’m simply impressed with the whole production of Mickey and the Magical Map. The dancing, singing, and special effects were Disney-perfect. I promise, it will be hard to choose between watching the stage and watching the wonder on your child’s face.

Mickey and the Magical Map runs seven days a week, five shows a day, through the summer. It’s what’s new at Disneyland!
