SAT Tests Are Getting A Makeover

Optional essays, free study aids and the removal of “SAT” words are just a few of the changes coming to the queen bee of standardized tests.

The College Board just announced a slew of changes coming to the standardized tests that high school students take in the hopes of getting into college, beginning in the spring of 2016.

Students taking the SAT will no longer be forced to take the essay portion for the first time in the history of the test. Those who do decide to take the optional essay portion will be asked to support their arguments by citing passages they read.

The SAT will also remove esoteric vocabulary words rarely used in daily life; there will no longer be penalties for wrong answers but rather just points given for correct answers; and in an effort to help low-income students, the College Board is partnering with Khan Academy to offer a range of free study aids. Students who meet certain income qualifications will now be able to take the test for free and apply to up to four colleges for free without having to obtain waivers from each school.
