How to Design Your Home for Maximum Impact

It may seem strange, but some of the simplest design tricks can make a great impact on the look of your home. It can even create the impression that you have had a major overhaul of your living space, even if the effect was actually achieved over a weekend. Here are some of our favorite tips and tricks of the trade, achieved with some signature pieces from Carpet Court, Australia’s largest retail floor covering specialist.

Make your room seem bigger – instantly!

It is a generally accepted fact, that light colors can make a room look bigger as well as brighter. The use of light walls and floors means light is more easily reflected, which will make your space seem more open and inviting. Using similar shades of the same color will add interest and avoid making the space seem cold. For best effect, choose soft shades of off-white or cream, or use hints of soft blue, green or terracotta.

Installing a timber, laminate or vinyl plank floor will also allow you to trick the eye into believing that the space is bigger, as the effect of the planks will give you a visual illusion of space. One of our favorites is the Zen bamboo flooring in ivory from Carpet Court. Bamboo flooring is very durable, eco-friendly and cost effective with all the warmth, character and beauty of a natural product. Once you have chosen your flooring, paint the walls in similar shades, taking care to paint the trims and skirting boards in a lighter shade than the walls. This will make the walls appear further back, and make your space seem larger.

Impact with impressive colors

Many modern homes are partially open-plan and may combine living and eating areas, or even include the kitchen or hallway. To avoid the space looking too big and unfriendly, a clever way of creating different zones is by using a splash of color with rugs. As well as providing a sense of coziness and warmth, they will also help to soften the noise of running feet on hard floors – great for busy households.

To avoid a clash of colors, try and choose a color palette that will not clash. That way you can use different designs while still providing a continuity of colors, or you can place a multi-colored rug in your living area to make a bold statement, and then use plain rugs in one or more of the color for your dining area, hallway or kitchen space, creating a coordinated overall effect. One collection of rugs that would lend itself extremely well to this treatment is the Gemini range of rugs at Carpet Court, which provides an absolutely gorgeous look and feel with its plush, dense, soft pile that will definitely add the wow factor to any living space.

Create a window on the world

Some of the most dramatic and high-impact changes that you can make to your living space, bedroom or other space in your home, is to change the window treatment. With modern dye techniques, fabric blinds such as roller blinds or roman blinds can create a beautiful visual impact at your windows, or you can opt for the warmth of timber Venetian blinds or even plantation -style shutters, with their clean, sleek lines. As well as providing a treat for the eye, these window treatments can also help your home to be more energy-efficient, and minimize damage to your furnishings from sunlight.

At Carpet Court, choose from blinds and shutters in a wide range of colors, textures and materials to match your interior style, and create the perfect companion for your flooring and walls.

As Australia’s largest flooring retailer, Carpet Court has almost every area in Australia covered with over 200 stores in prime locations nationwide, including regional areas. Each Carpet Court Store is locally owned and operated which means the staff go out of their way to give you the best possible value, service and advice. The Carpet Court Group has enormous bulk buying power so rest assured, you will be getting the very best deal there is.
