New Study Reveals Disney’s Most Successful Film—But Did They Get It Right?

Of all the serious studies done recently, this is definitely the most important.

Unfortunately, I think science got this one wrong.

But before we get into that hard truth, let’s talk Disney movies in general.

It’s basically a guarantee that if you’ve been alive any time in the last 8+ decades, you’ve fallen in love with at least one Disney movie. Impossible not to, right? The Imagineer just knew how to do it right.

That said, some Disney films have obvi proven more popular than others over the years.

And how do we know which ones rank among the mouse-eared elite? Well, a company called Play Like Mum took each individual movie’s Metacritic score, added in domestic box office revenue (adjusted for inflation, of course), and removed any outliers like documentaries or straight to TV or video/DVD releases—so sorry, HSM.

Alright, here’s the list we’re all dying to see.

10 most successful Disney movies

1. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

2. Fantasia

3. 101 Dalmatians (1961)

4. The Lion King (1994)

5. Pinocchio

6. Mary Poppins

7. Sleeping Beauty

8. Bambi

9. Finding Nemo

10. Toy Story 3

Say whut? Ariel didn’t even break the top ten?? That’s how I know something must be terribly wrong here.

BUT, if we’re choosing to take this whole thing seriously—despite that clear and egregious error—then we should check out a few more deets.

For instance, the overall scores are summed up with a number on a scale from 1-100. Snow White came out with a whopping 97.78! And second place, Fantasia, doesn’t roll in until a healthy ten point later. That’s a serious lead.

But when you think of how wildly popular some of the more recent films (Finding Nemo—9th, Toy Story 3—10th!) have been, it’s crazy to see them coming in at a 75 and lower!

But apparently we can’t argue with science. (I’m not bitter.)

Anyway, curious as to which films made the top of the House of Mouse “loser” list?

Least successful Disney movies

1. Man of the House

2. Underdog

3. The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause

4. College Road Trip

5. Snow Dogs

6. The Country Bears

7. My Favorite Martian

8. Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen

9. Old Dogs

10. Mr. Magoo

What do you think? Do the lists reflect your own Disney rankings?
