“You and I live in a moment in history where the world is designed to steal your time, your energy, your joy, and your focus.” — Mel Robbins

If you’re a parent, you probably don’t need anyone to tell you that life is hectic. Between managing kids’ schedules, work obligations, meals, laundry, and the 47 things you just remembered you forgot—it’s easy to feel like your entire week runs you instead of the other way around.

In her 7-Day Reset podcast episode, best-selling author and motivational speaker Mel Robbins shares a research-backed checklist to help you reclaim your time, energy, and peace of mind—one simple step at a time.

Here’s how to make this powerful strategy work for you (yes, even in a house full of chaos).

Why Parents Need a Weekly Reset

In Mel’s words:

“Having a great week isn’t what you think it is. It’s not about getting everything done. It’s about doing the right things that move you forward.”

This checklist isn’t about adding more to your plate—it’s about helping you clear it. With insights rooted in research from Harvard Medical School and Harvard Business School, Mel helps you focus on small actions that add up to big relief.

✅ The 7-Step Checklist for a Saner, More Satisfying Week

1. Do a Brain Dump

Parenting = mental tabs always open. So take 10 minutes and write down everything that’s swirling in your mind. Use categories like Kids, Home, Work, and Me.

“It’s like mental vomiting. Just get it all out of your brain.”

Why it works: When your brain isn’t juggling 62 random thoughts (“Did I sign that permission slip?”), you can breathe, think clearly, and prioritize.

2. Set Yourself Free

Now cross off anything that doesn’t actually need to happen this week. Be ruthless and guilt-free.

“You are claiming your time. You’re saying, ‘Not this week.’”

Parent tip: That deep closet clean-out you keep thinking about? Not urgent. Cross it off.

3. Circle One Thing That’s for You

Pick one thing from your list that matters to you—not your kids, your spouse, or the dog. Then block 15 minutes on your calendar to make a little progress.

Mel calls this your Hot 15.

“This is where you get to be selfish. One small step on something meaningful is fuel for your soul.”

Harvard research shows that making progress—not perfection—is the #1 driver of motivation and happiness at work and at home.

4. Plan One Meal

You don’t need to meal prep like an Instagram influencer. Just plan one dinner that saves your sanity. Something healthy, comforting, and doable.

“One pot of soup versus four takeout meals—less money, better mental health, and you’ve got something ready.”

Bonus idea: Make it a double batch. Leftovers = next-day lunch for you or the kids.

5. Schedule One Workout

Just one. It could be a walk with the stroller, a 15-minute YouTube workout during nap time, or a yoga session after bedtime.

“One 15-minute workout can reduce your risk of death by 17%—that’s not motivation, that’s science.”

Study source: A global study published in the European Heart Journal found that even short bursts of movement improve longevity and mental health.

6. Plan Time for Rest

Yes, you. Yes, on purpose. And no, doomscrolling on your phone doesn’t count.

“Rest is an act of defiance in a world that wants to keep you constantly doing.”

Try this:

  • Take a bath after the kids go to bed
  • Sit on the porch with a cup of tea
  • Lay in bed and read (with your phone in another room)

Even 10 minutes of real rest helps reduce stress, according to researchers at the University of Konstanz.

7. Connect With Someone

Parenting can be isolating. Block time to call a friend, meet up with another parent, or text someone just to say “thinking of you.”

“Relationships are more important than wealth, fame, or success.”

Harvard’s 80-year Study of Adult Development found that meaningful relationships—not money or achievements—are the biggest predictors of lifelong happiness.

Make This Part of Your Sunday Ritual

The magic of this checklist isn’t in how big the steps are—it’s that you do them on purpose, before the chaos of the week sets in.

You don’t have to do all seven items in one day. Pick a few. Start small. But remember what Mel says:

“This isn’t productivity for productivity’s sake. It’s self-leadership.”

Time for a Reset!

The 7-Day Reset is a lifeline. Not another to-do list. It’s a tool to help you remember that you matter in the middle of everything you’re doing for everyone else.

And maybe best of all? You can teach your kids what it looks like to protect your energy, prioritize rest, and find joy in the small wins.

Because when you reset, your whole family benefits.
