Just pack a bag, catch a ferry or take a quick car trip, and you get a lovely escape for much less effort and cash. A new favorite for easygoing fun: Chevy Chase Cabins in Port Townsend. There’s plenty to do in the area and at this beautiful property.
We took the Downtown Seattle to Bainbridge Island ferry on a Friday afternoon. It definitely paid off to leave early and beat the rush, as lines can be long before the weekend.
A quick stop in Port Gamble for dinner led us to the casual and tasty Mike’s Four-Star BBQ. Basic favorites like ribs and chicken can be ordered from the counter. The staff are friendly in that cozy small town way, so it almost feels like you are enjoying a meal at a private home. I also appreciate that they are especially sensitive to the needs of people with food allergies, and gluten-free eaters in particular.
On another trip to the area, we checked out the Port Gamble General Store and Café. It’s a good place for simple, moderately-priced dishes like burgers and sandwiches, in addition to seafood and a yummy-looking small plate menu.
The resort is right off Discovery Road in Port Townsend, and not far from the Hood Canal Bridge. It’s a happy combination of convenient and peaceful, as a long line of trees provide a good barrier against traffic noise. It also helps that the cabins and rental houses are set far back on the property.
We had a large group and stayed in the Homestead House, which accommodates up to six people. It was a gorgeous place: tastefully decorated and with a spacious common area. It was nice to have a fully-equipped kitchen, especially because everything was in such great condition. Our house had a fenced in yard, with an apple tree and lots of room for the little ones to run around.

There’s also a handful of smaller cabins on the property, which appeared to be outfitted with the same attention to detail in décor and amenities. I’d love to come back and rent one of these, because they look cozy, but almost luxurious. A couple of them also have amazing views of the water. Most of the rentals also have gas grills and decks with chairs as well.
A short hike takes you down to the waterside and a peaceful private beach. The upper property has an enormous lawn, with swings and a tetherball (the friendly resident dog Scout is always eager for a game). In warmer months, there’s a swimming pool, shuffleboard and a tennis court for added fun.
As we visited in cooler weather, we instead passed the afternoon at the farmer’s market in Port Townsend, where we found lots of yummy eats for low prices. Our favorites: the bratwurst and a delicious seafood stew.
Overall it was a fantastic weekend. Practically flawless I dare say. After all, I couldn’t do anything about the rain! This is a great escape for any time of the year.
