We can’t wait to share our ideas about projects and activities that can add a bit of color to your family’s everyday life, hear your views on the importance of arts education, and learn about what inspires creativity in your household.
Many of you might be wondering, “What is the UMFA?” For those of you who have never been to the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, let us tell you a little bit about who we are and what we do. The UMFA is Utah’s premier visual arts museum. In fancy terms, we aim to “engage visitors in making meaningful connections with the artistic expressions of the world’s cultures.” In simple terms, we are your family’s passport to a world of art and culture, open Tuesday through Sunday (year-round) at the University of Utah.
So what kind of art do we have?
Spanning more than 5,000 years of human creativity, the UMFA’s permanent collection features over 17,000 works from ancient antiquities to global contemporary art. When entering our galleries, kids, parents, and other visitors encounter the piety of medieval Europe, marvel at the intricacies of Native American weavings, walk with Egyptian Pharaohs, battle Japanese Samurai, and experience African village life.
Ever-changing galleries and special exhibitions make every trip to the UMFA a unique artistic adventure. On average, the UMFA hosts three to five temporary exhibitions at any given time, often from the most distinguished art collections worldwide. We have quite the lineup of exhibitions scheduled for 2010. Check them out here!

But paintings, sculptures, and art objects aren’t all that the UMFA has to offer. We want you and your family to have fun learning about the world’s art and cultures, so we plan a variety of free public programs for visitors of all ages.
Moms, dads, and teens can enjoy films, artist talks, gallery tours, art classes and more. Kids can have a blast exploring the galleries with puzzles, games, books, and other activities in UMFA Family Backpacks (free to check out at the front desk), and everyone is invited to participate in our free studio art activities on the Third Saturday of each month.
You can always commemorate your UMFA journey with art-inspired merchandise from The Museum Store, the perfect shop for jewelry, pottery, home décor, and unique hand-made gifts. The Museum Café is located just across the hall, and offers sweet and savory delectables like sandwiches, soups, salads, and pastries.
We hope that you will visit us soon and let your family’s artistic adventure begin at the UMFA!
