With summer fun picking up around town, it’s finally time to enjoy the waterparks and spraygrounds in and around the Beltway.

Many of the waterparks and DC area spraygrounds will be opening for the season during Memorial Day weekend. Several will remain closed on the weekdays until schools are out, so be sure to check their websites before heading out to enjoy some water and sunshine.

If you’re unfamiliar with spraygrounds, they are basically like running through the sprinklers with a playground twist. Water shoes are usually required. If your kid is anything like mine, spraygrounds are a more fun and comfortable way to get used to the water.

The DC area spraygrounds and waterparks definitely do not disappoint. Here are few of our favorites:

  • Our Special Harbor at Lee District Park in Franconia. The park is a zero-water-depth play area for children of all abilities. My little one liked going last summer if even just to watch the older kids and get a bit wet. I love that it’s free, fairly new and close to home.
  • Water Mine in Reston. This place has something for every age– sprays, bubblers, slides and floatable tubes on a lazy river.  My daughter loved the Tenderfoot Pond last year, and I expect we’ll be heading back more this summer now that she’s a bit bigger.
  • Drew Park in Arlington. I love this DC area sprayground right in Shirlington. It’s great to be able to walk and pick up a treat afterward.
  • Hayes Park in Arlington.
  • Lyon Village Park in Arlington.

To find a waterpark, sprayground or pool close to home, check out your local parks & recreation website:

If you’re unable to get out to one in the next few weeks, there are plenty of other outdoor options in our area. Some of our family favorites include:

I’m happy knowing that soon I’ll be at the DC area spraygrounds, sporting plenty of sunscreen and a very happy toddler.
