You make your staycation a special time with some fun extra steps. One of my kids’ favorite things we have done is making our home a ‘hotel’ for the weekend.
The first time we did it, we had our kids each pack a backpack with pajamas, clothes for the next day, and toiletries. My husband took them for a short drive in the car while I finished preparations at home. They had no idea where they were going and were quite surprised when they showed up right back at the house.
They came up to the front door where our sign, “Hotel Blankenbiller,” was posted. Walking inside, they were met by me with a small table at the front door welcoming them to the hotel. I checked them in and gave them a ‘key’ to their room. They put their stuff upstairs in their bedrooms and came back down for some evening refreshments – hot cocoa and cookies. We all stayed in character and it was so fun to see how they’d open up in conversation and make up background stories about themselves, treating my husband and I like we really were their hosts they had just met.
We provided room service menus for them to use to select their breakfast for the morning. And we were up early the next day getting that breakfast ready for them. Then we got on to the day’s activities. We have done this several times over the years. We have done things like bowling, swimming, touring a candy factory, visiting a museum, going to the beach. Pick something you haven’t done as a family for awhile. Or some place in San Diego that you keep meaning to go to but haven’t taken the time to go. Something that will be fun and memorable for you.
Here are some ideas for a staycation in San Diego:
Cabrillo National Monument – the views are beautiful, the tide pools are fascinating, the visitor center, exhibits and lighthouse are fun to visit. And it’s just $5 to park with no other fees.
Go Hiking – San Diego has miles and miles of trails from the easy stroll to the more strenuous hikes. Some of our favorites are Elfin Forest, Torrey Pines, San Elijo Lagoon, Los Penasquitos Preserve, and Mission Trails.

Visit a museum – Balboa Park has a variety of fabulous museum choices. The Fleet Science Center is one of my kids’ favorites. The New Children’s Museum is also a great choice. Another fun visit is the USS Midway.
Enjoy a day at the beach or choose a picnic spot for lunch after a morning of another activity.
You can “get away” for a day or a few days right here in our own town for much cheaper than leaving town. Enjoy the wonderful opportunities to play and have fun with your family on a staycation here in San Diego.
