If you’re raising little thespians, like I am, then you’ll be interested to know about these theatrical summer camps offered in various areas of San Diego County (and yes, it’s already time to book those summer camps, how did THAT happen
San Diego Junior Theatre – Students entering grades K-12 have the opportunity to take four classes each day with San Diego’s best teaching artists! Choose from JT’s two locations, Balboa Park and La Jolla. Camp prices range from $150-$375
Carlsbad Performing Arts Academy – CPAA offers a two-week “Broadway Baby” musical theatre workshop that explores singing, dancing, AND acting for kids 6 and up. For three hours every week day for two weeks and at the end of the session, the children put on a performance for the parents. Call (760) 438-4947 for more info!
La Jolla Playhouse – LJP offers a “Young Performers’ Workshop” during the summer. $200 for non LJP members, and $150 for members, grades 2nd – 12th.
North Coast Repertory Theatre – NCRT offers several camps for varying ages, all of which sound like a blast. They also offer early drop-off and/or late pick-up for parents who need a little more time. Rates are $280 for 2-week sessions and discounts for siblings, etc. Performances for parents close-out the sessions.
New Village Arts – NVA hosts camps called “Kids Act!” all throughout the year. They offer 10 week sessions where your child goes one day a week for 10 weeks, and they also offer traditional camps where kids go every day for a week at a time. Check out their site for all the details. Prices range from $125- $250 depending on the camp.
Some of my fondest memories from my youth are from the two week camps I did each summer called, “Showbiz.” They helped me learn a lot about myself, how to be on stage, and about the world of theatre in general. These camps are well worth the money for your littles if they show any interest in the theatre whatsoever.
