Every year, the Eagle Creek Park Foundation sponsors a free fishing derby for kids (ages 4-14) the first weekend in June. The first weekend of June is designated as a free-fishing weekend in Indiana, meaning that there is no need for a fishing license. This year, the fishing derby will be held on June 1, 2013. The event runs from 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM and again, it is free! It is held at one of my favorite spots, Eagle Creek Park. It is perfect for our family since we are not avid fishermen but still want our kids to have a chance to learn how to fish. If you don’t have any fishing supplies, no need to worry, you will be able to borrow a pole at the fishing derby. Live bait is also provided. To participate in the fishing derby, submit your registration (found here) by May 30, 2013. Note – registration must be received by May 30th and you’ll need to mail it in. Make sure to register as soon as possible since space is limited.
Our whole family is planning to go even though my son is the only one who will be fishing. We’re going to spend the day at Eagle Creek Park. There is plenty to do – hike, bike, play or visit the Ornithology Center or the Earth Discovery Center. Remember that there is small a per-vehicle fee to get into Eagle Creek Park ($6/car) so you might as well take advantage by spending some time in the park.
