Costa Rica Resorts Reviews: Hotel La Quinta de Sarapiqui

La Quinta Sarapiqui

This was our first stop and such a great way to start the trip! Hotel La Quinta de Sarapiqui is on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica and was about a 3 hour drive from the airport.

The Low Down

  • Rates: As of today their nightly rates are $110 - $140 per night (rates may vary depending on time of year, but not by much at this resort)
  • On Site Activities: Butterfly Garden, Frog Land, Caymans, Medicinal Gardens, Vegetable Gardens, Spa, Pool
  • Tours and Excursions: Boat Ride on Sarapiqui River, La Selva Biological Station, Tirimbina Rainforest Center, Chocolate Tour, Visit the Local School, Cooking Classes, Pineapple Paper Workshop, Tubing on the Sardinal River, Horse Back Rides, Mountain Biking, Canopy Ziplines, Waterfalls and Volcanos
  • Sustainability: They are rated with "5 Leaves" for Certification of Sustainable Tourism. This means things like they grow their most of their own food on site and buy from local merchants right in their neighborhood. They produce their own biogas on site and they ensure that they are not letting any polluted water re-enter the soil. They have a bio-digester and solar panels on site and have eliminated their gas and power bills because of what they product on site.
  • When to go: This resort is located in the Caribbean lowland, and the weather is more or less the same all year round. We were technically there in their wintertime (May) and we loved our weather. It's glorious, warm and green. I talked with the owner and she said that September and October are some of the best months to go in that area because it's when they have carnivals on the coast.
  • Our Favorite Things: I loved starting our trip out this way. Getting kids from point A (home) to point B (Costa Rica) is a bit of work. The kids were purely entertained by their surroundings and we could simply relax. Our kids were mesmerized by everything they were seeing in their surroundings. The food was amazing and inexpensive ($7-$15 a person). We are rice and beans people, and they had the best rice and beans, hands down. Be sure to plan in advance and take your kids to visit the local school. The school is always in need of supplies and you can keep in touch after your trip by letting your kids send some supplies each year to a place and children they have actually had interaction with.
  • The People: I have to give the owners a shout out. They live on site with their family and are so accommodating and friendly. My son loved their grounds keeper Beto. He had to learn how to tell Beto that he was his favorite. "Beto me prefirido".

Would We Go Back?

  • A definite YES. And I'd try to make it my first stop. I also think this is probably one of the best values from an affordability perspective for families.
