Museum Day Live! September 29

September 29th. I’ve honestly had it marked on my calendar since last year. You should too.

Sponsored by Smithsonian Magazine, Museum Day Live!, is something you will be sad to miss– especially if you’ve been wanting to visit your local science center or children’s museum. It’s an opportunity to visit some of the historic sites you’ve been putting off, or love, for free. Neighborhood museums across the country are participating.

The magazine is offering every household two free admissions. Claim your tickets here.

Last year, my husband and I trekked to Thomas Jefferson’s lesser known property, Poplar Forest. The couple hour drive alone was perfect for two new (and slightly frazzled) parents—with open roads and parts of Virginia we hadn’t visited before. Our baby loved being outdoors, and we especially loved how quiet she was on the car ride south.  The house and gardens were beautiful, and since it’s a bit away from the city, we figured probably less crowded than some of the nearby participating museums.

This time around we’ll likely stick closer to home with our now busy tot—visiting either the Newseum (I can’t believe my husband hasn’t been yet) or the Carlyle House Historic Park in Alexandria. Any excuse to get my husband to Old Town is a good thing for me.

Sadly, I just checked it out, and it looks like Poplar Forest isn’t a participating site this year. Some of my favorite nearby museums you can check out on the 29th are:

Washington DC:

Whether you live in Alabama, Oregon or here in D.C—what seems to be the mecca of museums—there are plenty of new places to explore. A full list by state or keyword is available here.
