Groundhog Day

I always enjoyed celebrating Groundhog Day; it’s a fun, silly holiday.

Last year I shared a little trivia with my children.

  • The groundhog is also known as a woodchuck, a marmot, a whistle-pig and a land beaver.
  • It is the largest member of the squirrel family, usually weighing between 12 and 15 pounds.
  • It is sometimes known as a whistle-pig because it whistles when it is alarmed and looking for a mate.
  • The groundhog is the only mammal to have its own holiday.

After dinner, we enjoyed these cute and delicious Punxsutawney Phil Pudding Pops.  They were a little challenging to separate from the cupcake papers.  This year I’m planning on making chocolate cupcakes, still using Nilla Wafers to create Phil.

I also found Groundhog Day; the official website of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club.  They have a tab for teachers with activities, games and even a recipe for Groundhog Cookies.

If there’s time, we would have fun making a Groundhog Day craft. One of my children already suggested making paper plate groundhogs; yes, it was the same child that suggested all of our other paper plate crafts.  The Activity Village had some additional ideas.

Beside the fun tradition of Punxsutawney Phil, February 2 is my grandma’s birthday.  Whenever I celebrated Groundhog Day, I celebrated my grandma.  This year, like all other years, I spend a few minutes remember the entertaining times with her and her playfulness.   Even though my children never met my grandma, I share my memories with them as we celebrate groundhogs everywhere.
