In the past we have just winged it and it was a blast! This year I think we are going to try and use a stencil on one of our pumpkins. My 5 year old son was looking over my shoulder when I was checking out what was available and he is so excited to give them a try.
From what I could find, there are plenty of sites that you can pay to buy a stencil, but there are also many free resources, too. So, here are a few sites that I found that offered some cool free stencils. There is definitely something for everyone and if you do not see something that intrigues you, you can always create your own (see below)!
Pumpkin Masters – 4 freebies + more for Facebook fans
Zombie Pumpkins – 4 freebies
DTLK – Tips for carving and 40+ free stencils from witches, ghosts, pirates, words and even Blue’s Clue

And of course, you can always create your own!
What you need:
- Clipart or a cool picture with defined lines on the internet
- On a Word type program find a picture in clipart that you would like use. Enlarge the picture to the size desired and print. A silhouette or a design with defined lines works great.
- Or use the Word Art option and some fun font to create a creepy word for your pumpkin.
- Print your creation out on paper and use that as your stencil!
