If you’ve never experienced the Dickens Festival in Port Jefferson Village, definitely take the time to get there this year if you are looking for seasonal activities for the family. While it’s not a big showy spectacular sort of event, it’s a little celebration of a simpler time. The Dickens festival is open for its 18th annual celebration on December 6th, 7th and 8th of 2013.

The village itself is beautiful this time of year with its many decorated shops and lights. On the festival weekend, you’ll find entertainment and costumed characters and so much more. There are scheduled family events, trolley rides, a lantern lit house tour of historic homes and even a Grand Finale Parade. Throughout the town, you’ll find fun places to visit and things to do like Santa’s Workshop, a fire pit blazing to roast marshmallows, a wonderful toys-for-tots train exhibit for train lovers of all ages (bring a new unwrapped toy as admission), songs at the church and a live boat building exhibit to name a few of the activities planned.

The list goes on–more planned activities your family may like are the horse and carriage rides, story time with Mother Goose, a Great Wizard Magic Show and the Story of St. Nicholas.

A Christmas jazz concert sounds seasonal and lovely as does the Christmas Carol play at Theatre Three (advanced tickets required). Concerts by local high school bands will be scattered throughout the weekend too. These are just some of the many events planned. You can see the full listing and schedule on the featured events section of

Even if some of the events don’t appeal to you, Port Jefferson is always wonderfully decorated for the Holidays and a stroll around town with the kids is a nice winter treat. You can poke your head into many shops, from toy stores to new age stores to nautical and seasonal gift shops and a lovely Christmas themed shop too. Restaurants range from take-out pizza, a popular delicious mexican cafe with a scattering of stools and counters, to seafood restaurants, an alternative health food eatery, an upscale steak house Paces and more.

The ice skating rink is open for skating on the harbor at the Village Center. The Center offers a changing art exhibit upstairs to stroll through, usually of local artists or themed art. Several cozy couches upstairs allows you to rest and take in a starry night view of the reflective lights on the harbor. It sure beats standing in the cold and it’s nice to get out on a winter evening and just enjoy the view.
