If your wallet is still reeling from Christmas and property tax payments….or frozen in anticipation of school tuition bills and taxes…..you can still have a romantic holiday with your sweetie.  Here are 5 easy ideas that don’t cost a lot, but will show your love.

1.Construction paper hearts. This is one of the most romantic things my husband has ever done for me.  It was our first Valentine’s Day while we were dating, and he’d recently been laid off so was watching his spending carefully.  (Side note: his frugality during this period was a ‘seal the deal’ characteristic was one of the many to convince me he was a keeper for life.)  On Valentine’s Day, I came home to a hallway and entry way plastered with conversation-type hearts he’d cut out from construction paper.  With sayings like “Be Mine” and “I Love You”, he made them all by hand.  My only regret is that I didn’t take a picture for posterity because it was such an amazing display, and certainly got his message across.

2.Handwritten letter. You don’t have to be a poet, a writer, or good with words….in fact, if you’re someone who typically

doesn’t have a lot to say, it can be even sweeter because it’s probably a more unusual gift.  A handwritten letter on nice paper that tells your sweetie how much he means to you is a treasure for you – and even your children, when they are old enough to understand – to keep forever.  Weave in mentions of moments when you knew you loved him and times your love was reinforced through his actions and behavior.  Go back to times you spent dating, all the way through your present life.  You may just fall in love with him all over again when you write it.

3.A playlist of special songs. With iTunes, this is super-easy and can be a cheap and fun way to rekindle memories of important times you’ve spent together.  From the first song you heard together, to your wedding dance tune, to the most popular song of the year your first child was born…..the possibilities are endless.  Just download and burn a CD.  You could even get super creative and create a special label or write notes to explain why each song was chosen.  Play the CD while having dinner together so you can laugh over some of the memories.

4.Set a special table for dinner.  If you typically have dinner with your kids, plan to eat later with just the two of you on

Valentine’s evening.  Take some time to make the table look beautiful, using your special china, candles, and whatever else you can find to spice up the scene.  You could even enlist your kids to help with this one, making crafts and decorations for the table.  I’m a big believer in the saying “The greatest gift you can give to your children is to love their father (or mother)” and this is a wonderful way to show your kids how important you believe your relationship as a couple is.  Great ideas can be found on Family Fun in their Valentine’s area.

5.Wear something special to bed. OK, this is where you may need to shell out a few dollars.  Even if you have nice lingerie, use Valentine’s Day as an excuse to “go red” and buy something just for the occasion.  Make it a special night for the two of you.  No need to say more!

I hope that these ideas will spark your own creativity and that you have a frugal yet wonderful Valentine’s Day!
