About a year and half ago I had the honor of photographing a birth! It wasn’t my first birth session, but it was my first home birth. I had just delivered my son six weeks earlier, and missed out on my long-anticipated home birth because of a complication. Unfortunately, I had to have a c-section. Needless to say I was devastated. So photographing this water birth was really a healing moment for me.

That being said, it’s quite different watching someone else experience a familiar pain. I was thinking the whole time that her pain levels were above and beyond what I had gone through and I remember wishing so badly I could take it all away. But in the end, a beautiful baby was born. And again, the joy far outweighs the pain.

In the process of his birth, I was able to catch a rare moment of him born en caul. I had never seen this before. The medical community believes it’s necessary to break the membranes for a baby to be born, but midwives know better. The amniotic sac was not broken until AFTER the baby came out. It’s a pretty special moment. The belief is that babies born en caul have a special calling on their lives. Knowing this family, I believe that with all my heart. His mamma believed if he hadn’t been born en caul the birth would have been even more painful. If you have never seen it, here is your chance:
