Walnut Creek’s annual Walnut Festival begins on Thursday, September 20th for 4 days of rides, refreshments and live music at Heather Farms Park. Kicked off the Saturday before with the Twilight Parade, the 75thannual Walnut Festival is fun for families of all shapes and sizes.
What began in 1911 as the Grape Festival, has since been transformed into celebrating the walnut, thanks to Prohibition. The vineyards were ripped out, walnut orchards were planted and the festival transformed into what we have today— though the walnut trees in Walnut Creek have since given way to Tiffany’s and Neiman Marcus. The run, parade and festival all help benefit community programs.
Entertainment for all ages includes the usual fair-type fare– the carousel, ferris wheel, hot dogs and cotton candy– as well as live music on two different stage areas covering all styles, from the Diablo Valley College Rock and Rhythm Blues band as well as a handful of tribute/cover bands to sing along with (if indeed, one can sing along to Rush).
