Read Across America – In Celebration of Dr. Seuss’ Bday

As I was visiting the library last night, I came across a Dr. Seuss exhibit in the children’s section.

It reminded me of the fact that we were asked to dress up our little ones in Dr. Seuss themed shirts at our daughter’s daycare tomorrow. The daycare had been celebrating a weeklong dedication to Dr. Seuss.

Unknown to me, March 2 marks the annual nationwide reading celebration coinciding with Dr. Seuss’ birthday. One can find different events marking this celebration by clicking here. In addition, Hats Off to Reading is running a sweepstakes thru March 10 – winners chosen daily for 20 days.

Ever since The Lorax came out last year,  my family and I have been reintroduced and have grown to love everything to do with Dr. Seuss.

Below are Five Dr. Seuss facts you may not know:

1.Seuss’ real name: Theodor Seuss Geisel

2.Other pen names included: Theo LeSieg, Rosetta Stone, Theophrastus Seuss

3.During World War II, Seuss served as the commander of the Animation Department of the First Motion Picture Unit of the United States Army Air Forces.

4.Seuss’ first book, And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, was rejected by publishers 27 times.

5.Dr. Seuss’s honors include: two Academy awards, two Emmy awards, a Peabody award, the Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal, and the Pulitzer Prize.
