Breaking Up with Facebook Friends

Maybe it's the negative political climate leading up to our presidential race, or maybe it's just people being obtuse about anything under the sun -- either way, this week I decided to dump a bunch of Facebook friends.

Maybe it's the negative political climate leading up to our presidential race, or maybe it's just people being obtuse about anything under the sun -- either way, this week I decided to dump a bunch of Facebook friends.

My criteria for the dumping included:

  • Constant political anger or extremism with a lack of willingness to honor any other viewpoint.
  • Updates that only document drinking, song lyrics, or workout logs. Since that person isn't being personal and I usually am, our contributions feel unbalanced.
  • Lots of cussing. Cussing in writing is so heavy and permanent.
  • Woe is me complaining every day.
  • Lots of "if you agree, click Share" updates. We all hate cancer. We all hate forwards too.
  • Blaming tragedy on victims.
  • Use of the word "retarded."
  • Misogyny, racism, or hatred of how cute my kid is.

For a really long time I thought it was ok to accept and keep any friendships, as long as there was a link for us from some point in history. Sometimes I would hide an annoying update from my feed. Not so now. Usually the people that cause you to "hide" a story will be repeat offenders.

I enjoy Facebook as a way to keep in touch with friends from the many states we've lived in, and I don't like tripping over negativity in my feed. Because you know what? It's MY PAGE. I get to decide what the tone of it is, because it's a viral extension of who I am and what I represent via the type of company I choose to keep.

How do you manage your Facebook page and the many friends who conglomerate in that one place?

Amping Up for Gulliver's Travels

The text message asked if I wanted to fly to L.A. for a Gulliver's Travels press junket. And would I like to meet Jack Black, Jason Segal and Emily blunt for interviews? Of course I dropped everything in my life and got on that plane.
