One of my very favorite things about being a parent is that I have an excuse to watch “kid movies.” I love them. I’ve ALWAYS loved them and I, quite literally, mark my calendar to see the newest family flicks in the theater.

Guess what is on the agenda for this weekend?

Even though I got to see it already!

My son and I hopped on a plane to see an advanced screening of The LEGO NINJAGO Movie at Legoland last week—and I could not love this movie more.

For reals. Most kiddo-focused movies manage to work in a joke or two that will make the grown ups laugh, but this movie is PACKED with funny moments. I laughed every bit as much as my six year old did.

And I’m going to throw down the gauntlet:

The LEGO NINJAGO Movie is the BEST LEGO movie yet.

You’ll see.

As a mother of two kiddos, I love it when family movies do more than just entertain. When they weave in inspiring and empowering messages for kids. Those stories matter.

I also love it when we come home with a plethora of hilarious one-liners.

I dare you to see this movie and not pronounce “Lloyd” “La-Lloyd” FOREVER— it’s impossible. I’m considering renaming a kid, just so I can use it all the time. (Kidding!)

So, of course, I’m taking the rest of the family to see The LEGO NINJAGO Movie this weekend. (Get your tickets here!

During our visit to Legoland we got to build with a Lego Master Builder AND Simon Lucas, the set designer for The LEGO NINJAGO Movie!

Did you know they build the Lego movie sets, brick by brick on a computer, just as you would in real life with your own Lego bricks?! MIND BLOWN.

Of course all of the kiddos wanted to know how they could land their dream job, and Simon had some fantastic advice, which applies marvelously for life in general:

The question that fuels creativity is “What is missing?” Keep looking at a situation or problem from a different point of view—sometimes literally—by looking at your art or build from a different angle.

It doesn’t matter what it is. Drawing, painting, building, sculpting—keep at it and keep finding new ways to enjoy it. Don’t worry about getting better because that will come naturally with practice.

Let your imagination run wild. You’d be surprised what answers a six year old can come up with to the question “what’s missing?” when placed in front of a huge pile of Legos!
