Portland Small Business Saturday

Talking about Small Business Saturday feels, I admit, a bit like I’m preaching to the choir here.

Oregonians are known for their support of local businesses, and this year will likely be no different. But there are a few Small Business Saturday ideas you may not know.

Ironically, Small Business Saturday was created by American Express in 2010. Through a major marketing campaign, American Express wanted to foster the relationship between consumers and their local businesses. Traditionally held the Saturday after Thanksgiving, this year it falls on November 30.

Portland Small Business Saturday, of course, has taken it to the next step. Almost a hundred small business owners have joined forces via Little Boxes. If you shop at a Little Box store on either Black Friday or Small Business Saturday you are boosting the local economy while finding that one-of-a-kind eclectic gift for someone you love. Everything from clothing and accessories to art and food are represented here.

Extra Incentives

If you download their iPhone app, or pick up one of their Passports at any participating Little Box business, you are automatically entered in their raffle where you could win a travel package, shopping sprees, hotel packages, restaurant gift certificates, massage sessions from local businesses, an iPad and more.

How it Works

For every store you visit you are given a code to enter in your passport/app. The more stores you visit, the more raffle entries you accrue.

Added Bonus

If you make a purchase at one participating Little Box store, show your passport or iPhone to the next Little Box store and you’ll unlock a 10% discount. With every purchase you make, you’ll get a stamp on your passport or app. After four stamps you receive 15 extra raffle entries.

Year Round Savings Alternative

Portland Small Business Saturday isn’t just for businesses downtown. Right now, if you register for a Supportland Card online here you can start shopping and saving immediately with these local businesses. The more points you earn, the more you save – all while supporting the community you love. Over 60,000 Portlanders have already signed up! And here’s my secret: you typically earn more points when you visit a new shop.

Confession

I admit, I hate shopping. I know, I know, but it’s true. It wears me out and I get no pleasure in meandering around “just browsing” for hours on end. Nor am I the die-hard coupon clipper or clearance-shopping guru that my mother is. But Christmas presents won’t buy themselves and my kids will enjoy being “in charge of the passport” during Small Business Saturday. And with the Supportland Card I won’t feel like I have to get it all done this weekend, either. Thanks Portland Small Business Saturday!
