Last night I clicked a handful of time and did almost all my Christmas shopping online.
The days of standing in long lines and braving the mall for me? They’re somewhere in the painful blue past. In their place I keep a list in an app on my phone, a bunch of things sitting in an Amazon cart, or a few emailed links. This is where I’d usually say that I can’t imagine shopping any other way, but the truth is that I have shopped the other way--and to the crazy rigmarole of hitting store after store in the ice, slush, and through baby tantrums, I say “No! I don't want to!”
How do you deal with those surreptitious Internet shopping packages, anyway? My kids cannot be trusted, so their gifts will go straight to my parents’ home until I can pick them up. And this time of year, when the packages seem to arrive constantly, the kids get grumpier and grumpier because so few of the items are addressed to them, and they aren’t allowed to open the boxes, period.
I will still shop locally this year. I love my local craft bazaar for small friend and neighbor gifts. Meeting the local shop owners, and my townspeople, out and about is truly a delight of the season. But you can’t make me head to a mall, park a zillion feet from the doors, spend hours (if not days) picking through over-priced nonsense goods, wait in some terribly long and senseless lines, fight a crowd of people writing checks, and then deal with those proliferating plastic bags. And that’s why I do all my Christmas shopping online.
