I loved the Southern drawls, the politeness and formality (despite the soap opera storyline) and most of all the plantation they lived on called Tara. So, when the family and I got the opportunity to drive thru Louisiana most recently, I knew we had to visit a plantation.
We didn’t want to stray too far from the freeway (about 35 min. from Baton Rouge), so we settled on Houmas House Plantation and Gardens. Luckily, we made their last tour and were we glad. This breathtaking plantation was everything I had envisioned it to be (with the added bonus of air conditioning due to modern technology). One of the many perks of this tour was that we were encouraged to take pictures and ask questions.
Our costumed tour guide recanted the history of the 23 room estate (which incidentally is one of the South’s oldest). It was owned by Wade Hampton who also happened to be the largest sugar producer in Louisiana. Interestingly enough the Houmas House Plantation & Gardens have been featured in films (Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte starring Bette Davis) and in historic literature.
