Healthy Living for Mom: Holiday Diet Plan

Now through New Year’s, there will be no shortage of food-centered festivities. This delights me to no end.

So, I’ve started hiding food.

From myself.

I feel altogether NUTS and proud at the same time. I mean, am I this person now? The person that hides Halloween candy in the coat closet until the first ding-dong kicks off the trick-or-treating extravaganza?

Remember my Chocolate Caramel Apple from last week? It spent some time in a infrequently used cabinet before it was time to enjoy it.

Hidden Treat.

Hidden Treat.

On the other worked. As I unloaded groceries several days before Halloween, my mind beat to the steady drum of “twixtwixtwixtwixtwix”. In a huff, I swung two grocery bags of candy into the coat closet and didn’t think about them again until it was time to start hosting trick-or-treaters.

So far, I haven’t had one single piece of Halloween candy—I sent the extra to work with my husband. Instead, I enjoyed a delicious slice of chocolate birthday cake on Sunday evening as a pre-Halloween treat.

But now. NOW. Oh, man...we’re about to run the holiday food gauntlet.

Mmmmmm. Pie.

Mmmmmm. Pie.

Now through New Year’s, there will be no shortage of food-centered festivities. This delights me to no end. It is my FAVORITE time of the year. I staked claim on my numerous Thanksgiving dishes a few weeks ago. Thanks to Pinterest I have big plans for my oven for the next two months. My husband is home more this time of year and I’ve already requested his French Onion Soup and Pumpkin Cheesecake.

I refuse to hide from the holidays. I don’t want to grit my teeth “get through” a party because a dessert table runneth over. I don’t want water when the evening calls for wine.

So it’s time to ponder and plan.

To make peace with a slower descent down the scale in favor of a holiday season rich in experiences and the occasional pile of monkey bread. To keep my holiday diet healthy without feeling like the crazy food hider. To find a way to wedge more physical activity into an already packed holiday season.

I just got a flier in the mail from the rec center in my town. The pool is open for lap swimming on Thanksgiving morning. If you’re looking for me between 8 and 10, I’ll be earning my pie.
