This past weekend, my friend and I ran a 10K race (6.2 miles) on Governors Island, a 172-acre island in New York Harbor. It was only the second time I’d been to there, despite its proximity to both Manhattan and Brooklyn. What was once a military base for the U.S. Army and Coast Guard is now a green, beautiful, peaceful, car-free island with a lot of arts, history and fitness events planned for the summer. Below are some health and fitness events for you to do with the whole family.

Fitness for the Whole Family on Governors Island

Bike New York Classes: Sunday, July 28 and Saturday, September 7 at 11 am

Learn how to ride a bike for the first time or brush up on your basic biking skills with free Bike New York classes on Governors Island. For details and free pre-registration visit bikenewyork.org.

The Skate Truck NYC: Sundays in June, July and August

National Park Service Hike

Even though the park is technically closed during the week, you can still join the National Park Service for a hike through the National Historic Landmark District on Governors Island. Park rangers will guide you on a 1.5-mile, 1.5-hour tour through over 200 years of history on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Catch the Manhattan ferry at 10 am or 2:15 pm, meet your guide and then return on the 12 pm or 4 pm ferries.

Come Out & Play Field Day and Family Day: Saturday, July 13, 11 am to 5 pm

Field Day and Family Day have games old and new at the Parade Ground for interactive play the whole family can enjoy. Field Day and Family Day is part of the River to River Festival. For more information: Come Out & Play.

How to Get to Governors Island

Governors Island is open to the public on Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays through September 29 from 10 am to 7 pm. You can get there by free ferry from Manhattan’s Battery Maritime Building next to the Staten Island Ferry (ferries depart at 10 am, 11 am and then every half hour)  or Brooklyn’s renovated Pier 6 at the end of Atlantic Avenue (ferries depart every 60 minutes starting at 11 am).
