Smart Mama

The Silly Bandz craze has indeed taken over the Dellinger home.

My 6-year-old son, Vincent, bought a pack the other weekend and now there are Silly Bandz everywhere. I’m surprised none of my cats have found them and hacked them up in a hairball.

I was in the checkout line at A.C. Moore with my 16-year-old stepdaughter when Vincent spotted a Silly Bandz display. He asked to use his own money to buy a pack.

As we walked to the car, I told Vincent to wait until we got home before opening the bag. Ignoring my directions, Silly Bandz flew into the air and covered the back seat.

“Vincent, I thought I told you to wait until we got home,” I said.

“Oops, sorry Mom.”

I didn’t realize how many of the silicone bands were in a pack until they were strewn all over the back seat.

Vincent spent the ride home picking up and carefully examining each of his Silly Bandz. And, with each one, he gave me a detailed report on what type of animal and color he had.

“The shark is my favorite,” Vincent said. “See, Mom!”

“That’s nice, Vincent. I can’t really look, Mommy is driving.” It’s funny that no matter how many times I tell Vincent I can’t turn around and look at something when I am driving, he still insists I look.

“Oh, look at this one! It’s a cool purple horse sea !”

I take a quick glance in the rear-view mirror.

“I think you mean a seahorse, honey.”

“Oh, yeah.”

When we arrived home, Vincent had just finished collecting the last of his Silly Bandz, and his tiny wrist now proudly displayed a rainbow of stretchy-rubbery bands.

“I can’t wait to show Daddy all my Silly Bandz!”

“Well go on then. Go show Daddy!”

Just as Vincent turned to run in the house, he whipped around and handed me a band.

“Here ya go, Mom. This one’s for you.”

“Thanks, Vincent.”

“Do you know what it is, Mom? It’s a penguin, because I know you love penguins. You can keep it.”

“Really? Are you sure you want me to keep it?”

“Yep!” Then Vincent gave me a great big grin and ran inside.

When I got inside, I found Vincent showing his collection to his dad.

“Look, Dad, at all my animals I got. My favorite is the shark.”

“Cool, can I have one?” William asked.

“OK, here you can have the shark.”

“Thanks, buddy.”

“But, Dad, I want the shark back later.”

“But I thought you gave it to me, Vincent.”

“No, just to borrow, Dad.”

I have to admit I was laughing on the inside because Vincent gave me a pink penguin to keep but only loaned the bright-green shark to his dad.

Later that evening, Vincent repossessed his shark, and I still held onto my hot pink penguin.

I haven’t taken off my son’s gift. And as silly as it sounds, every time I look at my wrist I can’t help but feel really loved by my 6-year-old son.
