Where is the must-have blankie?

Did I pack all the vitamins and medications?
DID I PACK THOSE VITAMINS AND MEDICATIONS SAFELY?
Oh, hey...that last one isn't usually on my list.
And I'm the packer/listmaker/hand-wringer that elicits hard core eyerolls from even the people who love me most and benefit mightily from my trip prep. I will honestly admit that it never occurred to me that how I've been transporting my vitamins and medicines could be a danger to my kiddos.
I spent some time on the Up and Away and Out of Sight website and got some really fantastic family travel safety advice—and as someone that has given her own mother FAR too many instructions when leaving her grandchildren in her care (my mother is a brilliant woman that doesn't need my instructions)—believe me when I tell you that many of these helpful tips had never crossed my mind.
Here's the thing—when my husband or I have received a prescription for something powerful following surgery or battling a bug, we've been militant about keeping it safe and out of reach. But all my vitamins? Not so much.
Medicines and vitamins that are "harmless" could be dangerous if they get into little hands.
Since traveling is the summertime activity of choice, let's talk about how to stay safe while traveling...
I like to pack light and I like to be prepared. Which means that my medicines and vitamins are all in travel containers. And since I worry about losing my luggage, I tend to bring these items in my carry on bag. Right next to the snacks and iPad in my bag. Yikes. I'll be going back to storing my medicines and vitamins in their original child-resistant containers.
GRANDPARENTS + EXTENDED FAMILY
We travel a lot with my parents—with overnight stays in their home and then with them on destination trips. I learned to pack light and be prepared from my Dad, so he's cruising through the airport with travel pill cases just like me! Now I know not to be shy about asking them to make sure their medicines are stored safely at home, and when we are traveling together.
The best place for medicines and vitamins when you're staying in a hotel? That super high shelf in the closet, or the passcode-protected safe! In a giant ziploc bag on the dresser? Not so much. The bathroom counter next to approximately five dozen travel sized containers of stuff. Nope. Not there either. Don't just secure your pricey tech gear and jewelry when you stay in a hotel. Secure your meds.
Summer travel often means that new and wonderful people will get to spend more time with your kiddos! YAY! Make sure the folks that your kids will be spending time with know where the medicines and vitamins are if they need them and remind them to put them back in a secure spot when not in use.
IN MY OWN HOME
There are a few things I could be doing better in my own home with my medicines and my substantial pile of supplements (thanks a bunch, autoimmune issues!) and here are a few changes I made right away:
- Storing my vitamins out of sight and out of reach.
- Remind babysitters and family members to keep purses and bags up out of reach. (We have a nice tall piano that's perfect for bags.)
- I won't be leaving the medicines out when we are sick. (I'm sure I'm not the only mom whose nightstand resembles a pharmacy when someone is ill.)
