It's hard for me to talk about 2011 without wanting to burst into tears of happiness.
(Sincerity Warning: up your dose of insulin here) I feel that I've been so blessed and cared for after a number of hard years. 2011 was a gentler year for me, bringing peace after turmoil. While there were challenges, there was also lightness. You were a part of the wonderful. Thank you for reading my work here at Todaysmama, I appreciate your eyeballs!
So what did I find and love this year? Take a look!
Fashion & Beauty Finds:
I fell a little bit in love with this sea salt body wash; it smells like a clean ocean, not too sweet fruit or floral.
Whenever I stepped into a department store, or retailer, and an item caught my eye, the label would inevitably read “ MICHAEL KORS”. I have no idea how this happened, but it happened all year long. Purses, shoes, watches, jackets, skirts, sunglasses, a blouse, iPod covers, it was like Michael Kors had a mental connection to my design and style sense. It was ludicrous. Do not get me started on his Jet Set collection (It's my blog's name! I'll take one of each!)
Anyway, one of the few items I permitted myself to buy were a pair of brown leather thong sandals similar to these:
Beautiful, comfortable, classic. I wore them with my Old Navy striped maternity maxi dress for most of the summer.
A pair of gold hoops and you're a modern classic, even when 10 months pregnant and in that dumpy-feeling time right after baby.
Downtown Abbey had its original run back in the winter/spring of 2011 and season two is about to premiere. You won’t find a more delightful and intriguing show this year.
Was anything more fun than meeting Ron Swanson’s ex-wives the Tammies?
Oh, who's Ron Swanson? Just this guy:
Zoloft! Can I get a what what? Here's to my first properly handed post partum year. May the Setraline Gods bless you, should you choose to accept them.
Tech & Gadgets Finds:
I always end up packing 2-5 books to take with me while traveling. This wasn’t so bad when you could check a bag, but when you’re packing light, the prospect of two large paperbacks and a hardcover in a carry-on bag is ridiculous. I picked up a Kindle Touch to cover this dilemma and oh my stars I love it. Will it replace analog books? No, not yet, but it does make reading on the go more convenient.
Favorites from 2011:
Rolling in the Deep
Friday Night Lights - the end
Bridesmaids, The Muppets, and Midnight in Paris
(I still have a lot of movies to see from this year.)
Gone With The Wind
I'd never read this classic until this year. I have a lot of feelings about this book. It's era-defining racism, the characters, the writing. I'm glad I read it, but boy, does it still make me think. Not reading it as a teenager was probably a wise choice.
Words with Friends. I can’t get enough of this Scrabble-like game. My secret? I love to play it right before I got to sleep as a way to calm my churning brain.
This year in social networking... Favorite Facebook status updates:
Mom Threats for New Millennium: "So help me I am going to upload this video of your tantrum to YouTube."
"Mom, I wish we had YouTube at our house." (I am going to Hell for lying to my kids.)
I am self-aware enough to know I'm the Cameron, not the Ferris.
I've forgotten what you even put in a bag for the hospital...BBQ sauce, obviously, but what else?
I had a baby girl this morning!
Sometimes, instead of hitting the children, I clap my hands together very loudly. Bonus: it scares the children.
(A whole lot of friends thought they were the only ones to do the loud clap. You are not alone!)
Nobody tell my mom, but I'm drinking a rootbeer and listening to Guns N' Roses.
Has anyone checked the van in the Twin Pines Mall parking lot for Gaddafi? #hunch
J brought me home a Diet Coke! It's his way of saying that he loves me and also that he doesn't want me to take a nap and leave him alone with the children.
My glands are more swollen than your mom's. Because she has an STD. For she is common. Jeepers, I'm bad at this when I'm sick.
There is more cheese inside a single Olive Garden than exists in all of Italy.
Most regrettable Facebook status update:
What? I never regret status updates. And if I do, I delete, then promptly forget about them.
Blogging in 2011
What is your favorite post written by someone else?
I have a couple. The first is Three Minutes Inside the Head of my Two-Year-Old.
I could have shared more with you but Google Reader got rid of their Sharing feature and totally borked my entire saved list of favorite blog posts. I'm still pissed about it.

Favorite photo of 2011:
What did you kick to the curb this year?
The fear of what will happen next.
What was your big moment of 2011?
Having my first natural birth, my first daughter and my last baby. And then I kept her alive.
What did you do this year that you’re really proud of?
I gave up control.
I've learned that giving up control doesn’t create a vacuum, it creates space to allow amazing things to happen. Don’t fight the journey the universe wants you to take.
What word sums up 2011 for you?
Best getaway of 2011
One day I was cleaning the filthiest toilet in the house, on my hands and knees with a toothbrush and Comet, and I thought to myself, “Huh. I bet I’ll never see Hawaii.” It just seemed completely out of the realm of the possible. I could see the years in front of me, financial restrictions, other places to travel; I honestly said goodbye to the idea of Hawaii in my heart.
The next day Rachael called me and asked me to go to Hawaii to cover the opening of Disney’s Aulani Resort. It was an extraordinary moment. I let go of the idea, and it came back as something real.
What is your #1 goal for 2012?
To manifest gratitude and to choose kindness.
