Birthday Letters

My daughter is turning four in THREE WEEKS. It might as well be tomorrow, she can hardly contain herself.

In four years, I've managed to half-finish a baby book and categorize the roughly thirty books I SHOULD be ordering from Shutterfly in my head. In other words, I'm not doing a very good job keeping up on the "sentimental" side of parenting.

I have a birthday tradition though for both of my kids that makes me feel slightly less guilty about my lack of a photo book from Halloween 2011. Right around each of their birthdays I sit down and write them a letter. I tell them what they are like, funny stories about what they have done, how important they are to our family and how much we love them. And then I seal it up, write their name on it with the number they are turning next to it, and toss them in the back of the unfinished baby book.

It's a little time capsule for their future, and I can't wait for them to call me one day after they've finished reading them.

Rethinking Birthdays

Birthday parties today tend to loom large in children’s fantasies months ahead of the event. “I’m going to have a Batman party,” a four-year-old will announce right after his last birthday celebration.

Letter From the Pig Farm

I was driving my grandfather’s old pickup to town the other day when we came upon a nanny goat standing in the middle of the road. I stopped and rolled down my window. Belle and Joe, sitting beside me, clambered over to my side to look out at the funny little goat and say hello.
