2009 Blogger Recap: Rachael Herrscher

We’re kicking off our recap series with some words from our fearless leader (TodaysMama CEO), blogger and tweeter. Get comfy while Rachael Herrscher shares a few of her favorite things from 2009.

Editors Note: We thought it would be fun to ask a few of our favorite blogging friends to recap their year. Today we’re kicking off our recap series with some words from our fearless leader (TodaysMama CEO), blogger and tweeter. Get comfy while Rachael Herrscher shares a few of her favorite things from 2009.

Here are a few favorites that I must share:

Fashion & Beauty Finds: Fashion? Hmm...I’m the antithesis of fashionable. But I will say my black Arc’Teryx jacket has been the best post-baby clothing staple. It’s black, it’s tailored, and it goes with everything. (I live in Utah, which means I’m entitled to wear any piece of outdoor gear/apparel on a year round basis...take that NYC fashionistas!)

Kid Related: The $19.99 white high chair from IKEA (I think they marked it up by $5!)

High CHair

Food Related: This little pumpkin delight. It’s sooo easy to make and soooo tasty!

Pop-Culture Related: GLEE! Duuude – did you watch the Fall season finale ??? If you missed it – here you go. You’re welcome!

Tech & Gadgets: I have an ongoing technology crush on my iPhone

Favorites that embarrass me and horrify my family: New Moon, it embarrasses my husband.

Favorites from 2009:

Song:Fireflies, Owl City (I love it even more because my kids love it.)

TV Show: GLEE, 30-Rock, The Office

Movie: The Hangover (did I just admit that?) Cute little baby Carlos ...(but seriously, just don’t watch the photos at the end, that will burn your eyes and soul).

Book: Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets – Ok, so we’re behind the times a bit! We (my 5yo and 6yo) read it this summer and then had a pj movie night before school started to celebrate our completion.

iPhone App: AniMatch (I got it for my kids, but I play it whenever I’m waiting for something). Oh, and Parachute Panic, I got that from Erin.

OK, as of today, one more! I just downloaded Santa Message 2U and left a voicemail on my phone from Santa to my naughty kids, urging them to stay on the nice list. I can’t tell you how fast they whipped into shape. They even started saluting me and asking to do chores. Yes Ma'am!

YouTube Video:The JK Wedding Dance (me and the other 35 million people who have viewed it). I seriously watch it when I’m having a bad day AND I tear up every time she walks down the aisle!

Eye Candy: My smokin’ hot husband! He’s legal (as opposed to Jacob Black).

This year in social networking...

Favorite Facebook status update (your own): It will be the Merry Christmas status update that I post in place of sending a Christmas card this year!

Most regrettable Facebook status update (your own): It’s probably the same one. I really do wish I had the time and budget to make some rockin’ Christmas cards. But it will still be a status update full of love!

Favorite tweet (your own): “What’s the weirdest thing in your purse right now? I just pulled out a set of fangs.” I got the best responses on that one! People carry some weird stuff in their purses!

Blogging in 2009

What great blogs did you discover this year?TheSpohrsAreMultiplying: I discovered her blog as many others did when she lost her 18 month old daughter Maddie due to the long term complications of pre-maturity. Now, as many others have, I’ve grieved with her and now wait with her to celebrate the birth of a new baby into their family. She’s been an inspiration.

StephModo: She packed up her little family and remodeled a cottage in the South of France. She was my daydream blog for a bit this year. A girl can dream can’t she?

Who are your favorite bloggers, year after year? The Jet Set: She has enough wit to last the ages

What did your favorite blogger teach you this year? Endurance. It’s been an incredible year to watch Nie Nie endure and move on to achieve. My favorite thing she said was when she was on Oprah while she was looking at a picture of her and her family before the accident “That was lovely and beautiful, and this is still lovely and beautiful. I still have all of the people in that picture”.

Favorite post of 2009 (your own): My sister passed away in September of 2008. I wrote this post on her birthday 8 months later.

Favorite photo of 2009 (your own): Snapped from my iPhone

Real life...

What did you kick to the curb this year? Sugar (kind of). I found out I’m allergic to it and I’ve stayed the farthest away from it I ever have (but not all the way)

It was actually to the curb until this month. Now I’m drowning in chocolate and caramel.

What/who did you realize you are particularly grateful for? Daily it’s my family.

The other thing I’m amazed by is the new allergy treatments we’ve been doing for our baby. It’s blinding me with it’s awesomeness and helping our baby so much! (

What did you do this year that you’re really proud of? Bucked up and gave birth to our 3rd after a substantial gap! (5 whole years!)

What word sums up 2009 for you? {blurry} It seems like 2009 came and went in the blink of an eye.

What would you have done differently in 2009? I would have been on my road bike more and gone on a few more hiking excursions.

Best vacation/weekend getaway of 2009.
Lol – I’m cutting it close to squeeze a vacation into 2009. I’m putting my money on 12/12/09. A weekend at the Canyon’s to go snowboarding and to the spa with my hubby!

(ok, I drafted that pre 12/12/09. Here’s the update. I got sick and puked in the garbage can in the lobby. Migraine. Enough said?)

What did your kids teach you this year? They’ve taught me about being an official “gradeshool mom”. I’ve got 2 in elementary school now, a 1st grader and a Kindergartner. Feels so official. It’s a whole new world.

What did your mom teach you this year? How to hang in there. In one years time, my mom buried her daughter (my little sister) and both her parents. Not to mention the ups and downs that come with this crazy economy over the past year. She’s made of steel.

What are you looking forward to most in 2010? Spring. (I know, it just started snowing, but I love Spring and I want greenness back!) I want a huge garden this year. (it’s currently snowing outside)

What is your #1 goal for 2010? To get a life! I have been a work-a-holic this year. I’m starting to work out again and shooting for a Sprint Triathlon and hoping to catch up on the 2500 pictures stored on my computer.

Oh yeah, and to blind you all with the awesomeness that will be in 2010. We’ve got some good stuff up our sleeve! ( am I going to get a life with so much up my sleeve?)
