Why Avoid Genetically Modified Food

You may have noticed a lot of talk about genetically modified organisms in the media lately.

But if you’re new to the subject, do you want to know why you would not want to eat genetically modified food? We will give you enough reasons not to think twice and start reading labels. I think many Americans are completely unaware that genetically modified ingredients are in everything you eat – in your crackers, frozen dinners, seasonings, bread, meat, you name it – it probably has it. Pretty much anything containing soy, corn, canola, cottonseed, or beet sugar  (or any derivative of these) is genetically modified.

It Isn’t Real: Genetically modified food is not found in nature. It has been chemically messed with in a lab. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to eat foods developed in a lab and treated more like a drug. There is just something about messing with food DNA that makes me loose my appetite.

It HasNeverBeen Tested for Safety: The only GMO study involving humans showed that GMOs survive inside the stomach of people who ate them. Essentially the experiment is on, and you and I are the testing subjects – or guinea pigs if you like. Studies feeding genetically modified food to animals, however, have resulted in pre-cancerous cell growth, smaller brains, livers, and testicles, damaged immune systems, partial atrophy or increased density of the liver, odd shaped cell nuclei, and miscarriages.

Are We Worse Than Animals? When given the choice, animals such as cows, pigs, geese, elk, deer, squirrels, and rats avoid eating genetically modified food.

Children are Especially Susceptible: The most vulnerable population in such experiments are of course our children. Their bodies have not developed yet, their cells are still multiplying at fast rates. If you are pregnant or have children there are even more reasons to avoid genetically modified food.

GMOs Have Antibiotic Resistant Genes: In the process of creating genetically modified organisms, scientists attach “marker genes” that are resistant to antibiotics to help determine if genes have been successfully altered. These are resistant to antibiotics commonly used in human and veterinary medicine. Antibiotic resistance anyone? It is so common these days, many people die because their body rejects antibiotics in moments when they are actually needed to save their life. Do you still want some antibiotics with that cracker?

Herbicide is Part of the DNA: Environmental toxins are not to be messed with. How will we know what happens in our bodies when we ingest glufosinate-tolerant crops? It may actually produce herbicide inside our intestines. Not to mention there are heavy metals in genetically modified soybean oil. Doesn’t go very well with breakfast, you know?

What are we to do as parents? I’m sure none of you want your kids eating these newly invented experimental foods. For starters, by definition foods that are labeled organic cannot contain any genetically modified ingredients. But if you can’t afford to buy everything organic the Non-GMO Shopping Guide will lend you a hand. Here is a very helpful list of genetically modified ingredients that are often hidden in processed foods. Did that make you dizzy? Now you have a good reason to stick to real food and ditch the chemical laden processed foods!
