Today was my first visit to Trader Joe’s, a specialty grocery store that sells “innovative, hard to find, great tasting foods” (see Trader Joe’s website.) For me, the 400 South 634 East location in Salt Lake City is a little bit of a drive, but my sister drives from Provo at least once a month to shop at Trader Joe’s. Today I decided to investigate why.
The name of the game in Trader Joe’s is affordable, healthy eating–there are no additives or preservatives in anything and 90% of the items are packaged by Trader Joe’s. The store was small and easy to manage with employees everywhere to answer questions. The produce section was small, but even the organic items were inexpensive. Much of the produce area was filled with specialty salads and mixes. For $77.00 I left Trader Joe’s with a cartful of items that I haven’t seen much of before and I am excited to try. This includes daffodils for my friend’s birthday for $1.59 (the check out boy said florists buy flowers from Trader Joe’s each morning) and a large basil plant I am going to nurture until I can plant outside.
My menu for the next few days will be compliments of Trader Joe’s and looks something like this:
- Trader Joe’s Gnocchi with TJ’s Creamy Tomato Basil Pasta Sauce.
- TJ’s Sweet Potato Bisque with iceberg lettuce and TJ Greek Feta Dressing.
- Indian Fare with Veggies in TJ Thai Yellow Curry Sauce.
- TJ’s Carrot Ginger Soup with TJ Inner Peas.
- TJ’s Mixed Berry Scones and Juice.

My sister said I missed out on the Trader Joe’s Black Bean and Corn Salsa. My brother in law said I blew it by not buying their cookies. Next time. We haven’t dived into the food yet, but I have a feeling I will be back.
