We now take a break from my typical fiesta of baked goods and chocolate to bring you, what my husband admiringly declared, “DUDE FOOD.”

Yes, these Spicy Garlic Sausage Sliders are going to be the hero of my big game buffet come this Sunday, but don’t for one second think that my lady-like tastebuds weren’t SIIIINGING when I tasted this:

These sausage sliders are a piece of cake to prep in advance and then warm up in oven when you’re ready to serve. I like things to be easy—and super tasty—so building this recipe around Johnsonville Bratwurst Sausages brought a ton of flavor so that I could add some of our other favorite flavor categories.

Flavor categories such as…cheesy, garlicy, and juuuuust spicy enough.

Now, you can use any dinner roll, but I can’t peer pressure you enough into getting your hands on some pretzel rolls. They crisp up so wonderfully in the oven and are chewy and sturdy enough to handle the flavor fiesta that’s coming for you…

Johnsonville Brats Original Bratwurst. RUN DO NOT WALK. You can grill these or cook them in a frying pan. I was pretty set on grilling, but then I stepped outside into the Utah winter and thought. NOPE. NOPE. NOPE.

While you’re cooking your brats, you can also sauté your peppers in a separate frying pan.

When they are soft and sweet, set them aside.

Grab a pyrex baking dish and set to work slicing your pretzel buns and slathering them with spicy mustard. We used a horseradish variety and think my husband may have finished off the jar with a spoon.

Assemble the sliders as follows, from the bottom up:

-mustard

-sliced sausage (2-3 slices per slider)

-sauted peppers

-swiss cheese

-top bun

Prepare butter sauce by melting butter and combining with crushed garlic and red pepper flakes. Once you’ve assembled all of the sandwiches, give that butter sauce one last stir and pour it over each sandwich. Try not to drool on the sandwiches…

Place in a 375 degree oven for 10 minutes until the cheese is melted and the butter sauce is nice and bubbly. LIKE THIS. (Warning: your kitchen will smell like buttery garlicy HEAVEN.)

SPICY GARLIC SAUSAGE SLIDERS

*Makes six slider sandwiches.

Ingredients:

  • Johnsonville Brats Original Bratwurst
  • Pretzel Buns (or dinner rolls)
  • Swiss Cheese (one slice per slider)
  • Red Bell Pepper
  • Green Bell Pepper
  • Spicy Mustard
  • Butter – 5 Tablespoons
  • Crushed Garlic – 2 teaspoons
  • Red Pepper Flakes – 1 teaspoon
  • Salt + Pepper – to taste
  • Oil – 1-2 Tablespoons (I used avocado oil)

Directions:

  1. Cook Johnsonville Brats according to package directions (either on the grill or in a frying pan) and set aside. Once cool to the touch, slice diagonally to get 4-5 slice per brat.
  2. Slice and sauté bell peppers in oil and season with salt and pepper to taste. Set aside.
  3. Prepare butter sauce by melting butter and combining with crushed garlic and red pepper flakes. Set aside.
  4. Slice buns and place in a 9×13 pyrex baking dish.
  5. Assemble the sliders as follows, from the bottom up:

    -mustard

    -sliced sausage (2-3 slices per slider)

    -sautéed peppers

    -swiss cheese

    -top bun

    (If you’re making these ahead, stop here and cover the sliders, and refrigerate.)
  6. Once you’ve assembled all of the sandwiches, give that butter sauce one last stir and pour it over each sandwich.
  7. Place in a 375 degree oven for 10 minutes (15 if refrigerated) until the cheese is melted and the butter sauce is nice and bubbly.
  8. Serve and enjoy!
