Set right near the famous Cardiff surf spot of Pipes, and known for their fresh meats and fish, Rimel’s Rotisserie is a haven for local surfers, endurance athletes, and pretty much anyone who likes a delicious, fresh meal. My husband has been hearing about Rimel’s for years now as he works in the endurance sport industry and has been told by many pro and amateur athletes that he must check it out. I’ve also know the owner’s wife via Twitter for a few years (I am in love with their other restaurant Zenbu Sushi which is a must try too), so it’s hard to believe it has taken us so long to get out to try it.
The history of Rimel’s is an interesting tale. Nearly twenty years ago when owner Matt Rimel and his newlywed, Jacqueline, were spending time in Baja, enjoying the local food, they realized that there was no where in San Diego where they could find the same quality food for take-out or dine in, and thus the Rimel’s concept was born. Since then they have opened another set of restaurants called Zenbu Sushi (located in Cardiff and La Jolla) and two other companies, Ocean Giant which is a Hook and Line only fish company, and Homegrown, a cattle company and butcher shop, with local, all natural, grass-fed beef, both of which service their restaurants.
On our date night to Rimel’s, I ordered the grilled fish tacos and would highly recommend them. I devoured them before realizing I should have taken a picture of them but I did snap a shot of the wondrous “secret” green sauce that comes with it. It was burst of cilantro and I don’t know what else and it was delicious. I poured it on my rice, my tacos, everything.

Everything we tasted was fresh and delicious. Though we went there on a date night, we definitely would take the kids there someday–their kid menu offers a wide range of yummy options for kiddos. (Side note: I did notice that there was not a changing table in the bathroom, but there were some little benches that can act as a makeshift changing table).
Disclosure: We were given a complimentary dessert at the end of the meal but these opinions were not swayed by the delciousness of the pumpkin cheesecake, even if it was the best graham cracker crust I’ve ever had in my life.
