Mom's Cinnamon Roll Recipe
Remember when you moved away from home and it felt like you called home for recipes every day? This Cinnamon Roll Recipe is from my mom and was one of the first things I missed. Her cinnamon rolls have a dash of maple flavoring in the sugar mixture and a maple-flavored glaze.
In honor of Mother's Day, I want to thank my mom for passing along her love of food to me. Thanks, especially, for being patient when I cook too slowly or screw up one of your recipes or ask you to hand-dip chocolate truffles the week before Christmas - as if you had nothing else to do.
Cinnamon Roll Recipe
Dough
1 1/2 teaspoons sugar
1 1/2 tablespoons yeast
1/2 cup warm water (100 degrees or less)
2 cups milk
3/4 cup ( 1 1/2 sticks) margarine or butter
3/4 cups sugar
1 teaspoon salt
6 cups flour
Filling
2-4 tablespoons butter
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup ground cinnamon
1 tablespoon maple flavoring
pecan pieces (optional)
Glaze
2 cups powdered sugar
1/4 cup milk
1 teaspoon maple flavoring
Dissolve the yeast and sugar in the warm water. Set aside. In a medium sauce pan, scald the milk and then add the butter or margarine. Remove from heat and let cool. In a large mixing bowl, add milk mixture, yeast mixture and dry ingredients (sugar, salt and flour). Stir and then knead the dough until smooth, yet still sticky. Cover with a dish towel and let rise for 2 hours. Punch dough down and divide into 2 pieces.

Roll dough out onto a floured surface into a large rectangle. Using a pastry brush, spread melted butter to the edges of the dough, leaving one long edge unbuttered. In a small bowl, mix sugar, cinnamon and maple flavoring. Sprinkle half of the mixture on the dough. Roll dough along the long side and pinch to seal the edge. Using a sharp knife, cut roll into 1-inch slices and place on a greased cookie sheet. Allow to rise another 30 minutes. Bake at 325 degrees for 15-20 minutes until lightly browned.
Make the glaze by whisking together powdered sugar, milk and maple flavoring. Drizzle on rolls while still warm. Makes 2 pans, approximately 3-4 dozen rolls.
Note - The rolls in the photo are unglazed. Once I put the glaze on, they start to disappear and I lose my photo opp.
