It’s been a crazy week, folks. I’m one of those lucky women that gets to spend, oh, we’re going on almost six days of off-and-on randomly spaced contractions. Sometimes I have to pause my shopping cart to grip my belly and breathe deeply. I get such a kick out of other shoppers reactions.
That’s my way of saying that there’s been a whole lot of maternity leave prep happening and not so much web-surfing. So, at Carina’s urging, I’m going to share a recipe (not mine) and a story. (As well as a few little bits from around the web that I enjoyed this week.)
With my first child, I went to the hospital after enjoying 4 days of random contractions only to be told, “Go home. Come back when the contractions are two minutes apart for two hours.” Disappointed, my husband and I went home. To cheer me up, he made the most delicious chocolate chip cookies for me. I proceeded to eat, no lie, at least a dozen.
Fast forward to the following morning while in actual labor, a nurse returns to tell me that the anesthesiologist is concerned about the spinal fluid that he drew while giving me an epidural. That my spinal fluid was “cloudy” and he’d never seen something like that before.
Shortly after giving birth, the nurse tells me that the lab results of my spinal fluid came back. I brace myself for the horrible news.
She tells me that it was cloudy, “due to an abundance of glucose” and askes, “What did you eat in the last 24 hours?”
“Oh. A dozen chocolate chip cookies. Or so.”
“Yep. That would do it.”
So, last night, my husband searched high and low to find the exact same cookie recipe with the hope of inducing labor. So far, nothing. I have enjoyed the cookies, but I am showing some actual restraint and keeping my consumption on the reasonable side. My guess is that if you’re eating so many cookies that it impacts the appearance of your spinal fluid it would be wise to back off a wee bit.
Go enjoy Alton Brown’s The Chewy cookies. You won’t be sorry.
Now, onto the bits and pieces from around the web....
One of my favorite bloggers has an amazing sponsor that is offering some great discounts to her readers. Cameras, lenses and laptops (even Apple). Go see! And hurry the offers end today. (Sorry for the short notice, my fault.)
I’m always on the hunt for a good homemade granola bar recipe. I’m going to give this one a try.
Such a cool iPhone app for parents.
Have a great weekend!
