What are the best apples to use when baking an apple crisp?
Apples are a personal preference. Does everyone remember the apple taste test in kindergarten? I do! Followed shortly by the class making a graph of everyone’s favorite type of apple. While I’m pretty sure that I was a Granny Smith lover back in the day, my apple tastes have expanded since then to a wider variety.
When selecting apples for your crisp or pie, look for firm apples. Granny Smith, Fuji, and Honeycrisp are all popular choices. Use them together for an assortment of apple flavors or use one type at a time. It’s also a great idea to combine apples that are known for being more tart with apples that have a reputation for being sweeter. A popular combo to support this blend would be a Braeburn apple combined with a Golden Delicious or a Pink Lady paired with a Granny Smith.
Don’t forget to peel your apples! Leaving the skins on can affect the texture and consistency of your crisp.
Why Is My Apple Crisp Dry?
The key to not having your apple crisp turn out dry is using the perfect amount of butter. If you don’t use enough butter, the topping becomes dry and floury. If you use too much butter on your topping, it can turn out greasy. If you feel that your crumble is dry when you’re done baking, add extra melted butter to the top, one tablespoon at a time until you feel you have the right consistency for the perfect apple crisp.
Apple Crisp Vs. Apple Crumble: What’s The Difference? What’s a Cobbler?
Have you ever wondered what the difference is between an apple crisp and an apple crumble? How about a cobbler?
Apple crisp is best known for being a baked dessert with a layer of topping. A crumble is extremely similar to a crisp, but the difference is that with a crumble, the topping rarely contains oats or nuts and is generally more of a streusel topping. If you’re a fan of oats and nuts, I would tend to lean more towards the crisp!
And since we are talking crisps and crumbles, it only seems right to include the popular cobber. Also, a baked fruit dessert, a cobbler, is generally prepared in a deep dish but is topped with drop biscuits or pie dough topping.
