The One Pan Dinner Trick That Will Make Your Day

What’s your go-to dinner? The one that you can pull out of your hat at a moments notice because the supplies are easy to keep stashed in your fridge and pantry? Is this magical meal a one pan dinner?

Mine wasn’t.

My go-to was a version of spaghetti and meatballs.

Pasta + sauce + meat = HAPPY FAMILY.

But this family favorite was hardly a one pan dinner. On my best day, this was three. One pan for cooking the meat, one pan for the pasta, and one for the sauce. It was pretty quick, but what time I gained in getting a hot meal on the table, I lost in toiling through clean up.

Did I mention that my dishwasher is broken?

But spaghetti is my husband’s FAVORITE meal. He’d eat it twice a week. If we kept to his schedule, I would have just cleaned up the dishes from the previous spaghetti dining experience when it was time to whip it up again.

I’ve been working on finding a middle ground between full-blown scratch cooking (read: hours in the kitchen) and takeout (read: the kids and me eating breadsticks in my car) so one pan meals have been on my radar.

But what about the old stand by? That the family begs for? I had to hack spaghetti and meatballs.

Have you seen this box?

It’s Barilla Pronto and it makes spaghetti and meatballs look like this:

One pot dinner. (And I know that’s Penne. Work with me.)

It gets better. A one pan dinner that took 20 minutes from start to finish.

Here’s how you do it.

Pour dry pasta in pan.

Add 3 cups of cold water. Turn burner to HIGH. (I added salt.)

Let it do it’s thing for 10 minutes. Stir. Don’t drop your camera in a pan of boiling pasta. (Like I almost did.)

When the water is absorbed, add your favorite jar of pasta sauce. Stir.

Also add thawed (but previously fully cooked) meatballs and cook over medium heat until the meatballs are warmed through (about 10 minutes.) Add chopped fresh basil at the last minute and give it a stir.

Serve with grated parmesan cheese. Maybe a salad for good measure. What the heck. Serve it on paper plates…as my husband helpfully suggested.
Barilla Pronto has earned a recurring spot in my pantry.
Also…if you need any pasta colanders, you can have mine. I won’t be needing them anymore.
