Top Baby Names in 2014

A website aptly named Belly Ballot that relies on social media to track baby-naming trends just released its predictions for the year. On the upswing are both Latino and Biblical names while baby names ending in -den are definitely out. Here’s what you can expect to see on birth announcements in the coming months thanks to these top baby names in 2014.

5 Baby Name Trends 2014

1. Unconventional spellings continue to rule

From Izabell to Karter, parents are giving a twist to names that sound traditional but look anything but on paper. The idea is that kids can stand out, but in a subtle way.

2. Celebrity baby names surge

From TV shows to movies and everything in between, celebrity baby names are always en vogue. This year’s TV favorites include Hayley and Camille (spelled however you like, of course) from the vampire romp The Originals, Piper from Orange is the New Black, and Ichabod and Katrina from Sleepy Hollow. Shakira’s son’s name, Milan, is trending this year, too, as is Lincoln, the name of Kristen Bell’s daughter, Everly (Channing Tatum’s daughter) and Autumn, Jennifer Love-Hewitt’s newborn. Oddly enough, there was no mention of Kimye’s North.

3. Strong Latino influences

From Maria to Mario to Lola and Luis, there was an uptick in the number of Latino baby names, and not always from Latino parents. Names like Carmen, Diego, Miguel and and Sierra are growing in popularity.

4. Bible babies

Ever since the naming of a new Pope last year, the number of people who attend mass has increased. Now that trend seems to be spilling over into baby names as Caleb, Isaac, Shiloh, Luke and Naomi make a comeback.

5. A peek into Greek mythology

Lots of trending baby names would easily be at home in a Greek mythology book. Luna, Gaia, Tristan, and Thor were all trending.

I have always loved the name Hayley…so adorable! I’m personally not a big fan of the misspelling trend, but glad to see things are going to get more “normal” in 2014
