Silver Snowflake Votives - Silhouette Project - TodaysMama.com

My goal was simple.  In one hour or less, I wanted to design, cut and create some easy gifts for friends.  With the silver vinyl as my inspiration, I decided to make these silver snowflake votives.

Opening the Cameo box, I immediately noticed its sleek design.  I downloaded the Studio Designer software onto my laptop and I was ready to go.  While I try to be a jump-in kind of gal, I did crack the instruction book to reference the page describing the software toolbar buttons.  The Studio Designer is simple enough to use after just a couple minutes but has enough options I could get really technical if I wanted too.

I opened my brower to the online image library and found the Dot Branch Border (#11149), and several Dot Branch Rosettes (#12851, #11150 and #12852).  I sized the border images to be approximately 1.75 in wide and the rosettes at 2.5 inches to fit the 2.5-inch votive.  On the 9-inch wide vinyl I could fit 5 rows snugly and 3 rosettes across.

Once I sized my images, I sent the file to the CAMEO and selected vinyl as my material.  I needed to adjust my blade depth using the handy tool. I did wonder if there’s a place to store the blade tool as my toddler was already playing with it and I see it might get lost.

The CAMEO cut quickly and rather quietly and my design started to appear.  I love being in “full production” mode!  Once the cutting was finished, I had to remove the surrounding vinyl.  Since my cutting mat was brand-spanking new, it was a bit tricky to get the vinyl off without yanking apart my intricate cuts.  I learned to work slowly and in sections. If I’d cut the design a bit larger or spaced the images a bit further apart, the task may have gone faster.

My votives measured 6 3/8″ around so I cut each 12″ border strip in half.  Peel off the backing and gently apply your vinyl to your votive. I did have a small gap on the back as I was 3/8″ short but it didn’t bother me.

Time check – 45 minutes

I needed to apply all my vinyl branch borders but I decided I could cut some more snowflakes using the rosette images while I worked on applying the branch borders.

By the time I’d cleaned up my paper bits and wrapped my votives, I’d spent about 75 minutes crafting, but I also had six sets of three candles ready to gift and some to keep for myself.  I grabbed a 4-inch cylinder vase and added a snowflake on both sides.

Another bonus?  I decided I could use my left-over rosette outlines as a stencil to etch onto a set of drinking glasses. See? Even my crafting has deliciously useful leftovers. Stay tuned for that project.

Another feature I tested was the Print & Cut tool.  Ever try printing out a cute label and trying to punch or cut around it?  It can be so time consuming that I often think- Skip the label. Not anymore!

Print and Cut Label Project - Silhouette CAMEO - TodaysMama.com

With the CAMEO and the Studio Designer software, I was able to find a set of Print & Cut labels (#34958) by searching “print and cut” on the online store.  I downloaded the file, opened the software and arranged the label on my cutting mat.  I sized it to fit my 3-inch treat bags and selected Show Registration Marks.  I loaded the printable foil into my laser printer and sent the file.  Then, without adjusting anything on the software, I sent the printed page through the CAMEO and out popped perfectly cut labels.

On my second page, I noticed my printer had run out of ink.  Turns out my cuts started off in the wrong place as the device couldn’t read the third registration mark.  I stopped the cutting, took a sharpie and wrote over the faint registration mark at the bottom and started cutting again.  The rest of the page came out perfectly. The foil makes a thick and sturdy label and the ink doesn’t smudge.

Overall, I was impressed with how many projects I could think of that could be finished in just a few steps using the CAMEO.  My kids wanted to make Christmas wish jars out of hot chocolate cylinders, decorated with custom-cut stickers and I dream of cutting fabric to make advent calendars or custom aprons for the grandmas.  If you’re someone with small windows of time for crafting, you’ll want something that’s this easy to use.   Hope you have fun making your own Silver Snowflake Votives!
