Slow Cooker Cracked Wheat Recipe

When it’s super cold outside and dark when I wake up, I know it’s time to bring out the Cracked Wheat Recipe.  A bowl of this hot cereal for breakfast leaves me cozy and satisfied until lunchtime.  Feeding my kids cracked wheat is a nice change of pace from our oatmeal routine.

Cracked Wheat Cereal

Ingredients
white wheat berries (uncooked wheat grain)
water
pinch of salt

Toppings
milk
brown sugar
honey
raisins
yogurt
fruit

Recipe
Plan your meal using a 1/2 cup cooked wheat as your serving size. Similar to rice, 1 cup of uncooked wheat will yield 4, 1/2-cup servings.  Typical water to wheat ratio is 3 to 1. For 4 servings, add 1 cup raw wheat to 3 cups of water in a slow cooker.  Add a pinch of salt and cover. Cook on low for up 8-10 hours or overnight.  Cereal will have puffed up and absorbed the majority of the water and cracked open to reveal puffy white insides of the wheat.  If you prefer a firmer cereal, reduce the cooking time to 7-8 hours.  I like my cereal soft but still “squeaky” to chew.

Alternate Uses
Wheat can be prepared for use in other dishes like Wheat Berry Salad or as a side dish for dinner instead of rice.  Cover your wheat in water and soak for 6-8 hours or overnight.  The water will be absorbed. Store in the fridge until ready to cook.  To cook, add wheat to water in the 3 to 1 ratio in a stove-top pan. Bring to a boil and then reduce to a simmer. Continue to simmer for 40-50 minutes until grain has become tender but not mushy.
